The Twig Team

Natasha Milne

My childhood years were spent in suburban Australia with a backyard full of beetles, birds, spiders and lizards.  Later I lived in Canada and then New York City, learning to embrace a different kind of nature.

A lover of our earth by design, I was a editorial photographer by profession for for over 20 years, with a range of clients including the UNDP. I recently co-edited an environmental book called One Hundred and One Reasons To Get Out of Bed, and host a podcast called My Home Planet as an extension of that book. I also  have a short five minute nature-connecting podcast called Ant to Sol. (antidotes to solastalgia)

I am a volunteer at my local wildlife rescue organisation WIRES, am a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, and a pre-selection judge for the New York WILD film festival.

I'm thrilled that you found us at twig.fm and hope you'll join the tribe.

Five fun facts about me

-Johnny Depp watched me move into my first apartment in NYC
-I've jumped out of a plane twice
-I'm an ant whisperer

I'm a children’s author-illustrator; a lawyer and part of Animal Works, an Australian not-for-profit association that works with partners around the globe to conserve wildlife.

I am the host of Wilderkids - a monthly podcast for parents/teachers of eco kids. Introducing you to books, films, events and methods to help you rewild your child (or just start them off wild) . . . So we can save the planet!

I also write and illustrate a series of children’s books - The POWEs (Protectors Of Wildlife Endangered), which take children on adventures all around the world saving our planet’s wildlife. The series donates 20% of its profits to conservation charities.

Five fun facts about me

-I once won a limbo dancing competition
-My first home with my partner was a campervan (and it's the only kind of home we've really aspired to ever since)
-When I was little I used to go out into the woods to poop because I wanted to be wild like the animals
-I can hold my breath for 2 minutes and hold secret aspirations to be a mermaid

I grew up on a diet of David Attenborough documentaries and Gerald Durrell books, and rather hoped to save the world. The challenges were somewhat different then.

As a grown up, over the past 20 years as a presenter, interviewer and podcast and documentary maker on ABC Radio National I've continued that passion, making features and community based content around our relationship to landscape and environment.

With global warming our greatest existential threat, I want most of all to use positive communication to help people come to terms with climate change and feel they can make a difference. I hope to inspire environmental engagement and spread the word about practical solutions in a way that is both accessible and forward thinking.

My work includes ABC RN's 'Hot summer land' project, the 'Trees I've loved' project and the associated book, 'In their Branches'. Most recently I travelled through South East Asia to make a four part series, 'The Silent Forest' - which went to air on BBC World Service to 40 million listeners, as well as on ABC RN.

In 2018 I'm staring a PhD in the power of podcast to help environmental movements get their message across, and will be teaching podcasting to postgraduate students at the University of Sydney.

My philosophy is to dig deep, with a light touch - if you like you can hear some of my work on my website.

Five fun facts about me
-I sculpt large horse heads out of concrete

-I have my profile on a beer can

-I  want chickens in my back yard (bees, chickens and a donkey but will settle for chickens)

- Spiders make me climb on tables

-I dance badly but with great enthusiasm
